At present, the strong El Niño is spreading across Africa, creating the severest famine in recent 30 years. The affected population is expected to be more than 35 million. African countries are appealing international community to provide emergency assistance.
President Xi Jinping announced at the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation on December 4, 2015 that the Chinese side attaches much importance to Africa’s crop failure as a result of the El Niño, and will provide disaster-stricken countries with RMB1 billion of emergency grain assistance.
MOFCOM carefully implemented President Xi Jinping’s promise to Africa, launched the emergency assistance plans and worked with the relevant departments to study and formulate the concrete assistance measures timely and start to organize and carry out the work.
